Victory Lane: Summer League Title Chase Heats Up in Week Six

The Victory Lane Karting Adult Summer League competitors continued their chase for top honors recently, with Round Six at the well-liked North Carolina indoor karting track. Hans Soneson scored the Lightweight win, and was joined in the winner's circle by Heavyweight victor Cody Robnett and Novice winner Douglas Hess.

With the season-finale fast approaching, all the Lightweight front-runners entered Round Six seeking to add precious champion points to their tally. In what would ultimately be successful night of racing, Soneson posted the fastest time qualifying to earn the pole position and five bonus points. Come race time however, the former series champion had his hands full via attacks from fellow title contenders Bryan Coe, Paul Shelton, Jason McCannon and returning track standout Robnett. While Coe was able to post the fastest race lap, it was not enough to prevent Soneson from scoring his first win of the campaign. Shelton completed the top-three, leading Robnett, who was awarded the Hard Charger award and points, and McCannon to the stripe.

As expected, the fight for Heavyweight supremacy in week six was just as entertaining to watch. Robnett, having missed the previous two events, was the driver to beat in qualifying, securing the pole. Branson McCannon, Jason McCannon, Soneson and Coe had other ideas about who should lead the way when the green flag waved though, with all five racers dicing for position. Robnett was not to be denied however, capturing his second win in three starts, holding off the fast lap winner and Hard Charger winner Branson McCannon at the checkered flag. Strengthening his championship hopes, Jason Mcannon joined in the podium celebrations with a third place result, ahead of Soneson and Coe.

The chase for Novice class top honors on the night featured a good mix of talented racers vying position from start-to-finish. Hess, showcasing why he earned a series title during the spring, converted the pole position into a second consecutive class victory, narrowly edging Hard Charger award winner Ian Lazarus at the stripe. Chris Goodman continued his quest for a series title with a third place result, while Tim Morton and Mike Birkle, earning his best result to date, competed the top-five.

The Victory Lane Karting Adult Summer League drivers returned to action on July 19, with Round Seven at the renowned Charlotte, N.C., indoor karting facility. Taking into account the mandatory one-drop rule, Coe holds a narrow advantage (252-248) over Soneson in the Lightweight class. The order however is reversed in the Heavyweight class, with Soneson out front (236-199) of Coe. Ron Gilson continues to lead the way (270-221) in the Novice class, over Lazarus.
