Victory Lane: Summer League Titles Go Down to Season-Finale

The Victory Lane Karting Adult Summer League title chases will come down to the wire, following an entertaining Round Seven recently at the renowned North Carolina indoor karting facility. Fred Ogrim (Lightweight), Cody Robnett (Heavyweight) and Ian Lazarus (Novice) all strengthened their championship hopes with wins in the penultimate round of competition.

As has been the case since week one back in early June, the fight for Lightweight honors in Round Seven featured several highly talented racers going head-to-head. Current championship number two man Bryan Coe got his night off to an ideal start, posting the fastest time in qualifying, earning the P1 starting place and five bonus points. Ogrim, Hans Soneson, Michael Ibach and Robnett were not far back however, and when the race action got underway a short time later they immediately made their presence felt. In what was a fun race to watch, Ogrim marked his return to series competition - having missed the previous two rounds - with a a visit to victory lane. Soneson, earning both the Hard Charger and fastest race lap bonus points, ensured he would leave the night still leading the title fight thanks to a runner-up finish, while Coe completed the top-three, ahead of Ibach and Robnett.

Given the Heavyweight class featured one of the closest title fights in recent memory, it came as no surprise that week seven featured some very close racing. Returning after a one week hiatus, Walt Sova was the driver beat in qualifying, earning the pole position and the vital five bonus points. Come the waving of the green flag, Robnett, Soneson, Douglas Hess and Coe had other ideas however on who should take home the victory. Only decided via the final run to the stripe, Robnett emerged with the victory just ahead of Sova. Soneson, posting the fastest lap of the race, was next to the checkered flag, leading former Novice champion Hess and Coe.

Rapidly developing into one of the most entertaining race groups to watch, the battle for the Novice victory in Round Seven featured all the title contenders running in close formation. Championship leader Ron Gilson led the large 15-kart field to the green, but immediately came under attack from Lazarus, Tim Morton, Anthony Sanders and Chris Goodman. Posting the fastest lap of the race, Lazarus was able to work his way to the front and eventually score his inaugural series win over Morton and Gilson. Sanders and Goodman completed the top-five, while Matthew Appleton was awarded the Hard Charger bonus points for his eight place result.

The 2010 Victory Lane Karting Adult Summer League concludes on July 26, with Round Eight at the Charlotte, N.C., indoor karting facility. Soneson enters the season-finale leading both the Lightweight (305-301) and Heavyweight (285-237) title chases over Coe. In the Novice class, Gilson remains out front (319-276) of Lazarus.
